Volunteer Tax Preparation Training for 2012

No previous experience is necessary. Almost anyone willing and able to do a little training (in the classroom or via the internet) can become a certified volunteer tax return preparer.

Classroom Training

Training materials and lunch are provided. Interested persons must SIGN UP for their preferred training session by contacting Susan at stamanaha@hacbed.org. This is to assure that sufficient training materials will be available for all students. On the neighbor islands, live training will be offered if there is a sufficient number of people interested in volunteering.  The reason for this is that all trainers except one reside on Oahu and must travel to the neighbor islands to conduct classes.

Online Training

Volunteers have the option to train online at www.irs.gov – the Internal Revenue Service’s website (search for Link and Learn). The training at Link and Learn is divided into various modules: basic, intermediate, advanced, military, etc. Volunteer tax return preparers for VITA only need to pass the basic module. The student is given 2 chances to pass. The passing grade is 80%. Those who are interested in using this method of training will need to request an online training kit from the Program Coordinator before beginning the online course. Use the Contact form on this site to enter address for delivery of the training kit http://hawaiitaxhelp.org/contact/
